DIY Starter Pack: The Tools to Buy Before Your First House Project, in Order

Buying tools in the wrong order costs money twice. This starter pack lists what to buy first, what to buy when you take on a real build, and what to buy when your garage becomes a shop, with an Amazon pick and a factory-direct Grizzly pick for every item.

How to read this starter pack

The tiers are cumulative. Tier one covers the first year of small jobs. Tier two adds the power tools that turn a repair into a build. Tier three assumes a garage you can dedicate to the work, with the power to run it. Each card below has an Amazon button and a Grizzly button, and one sentence on which to choose. If the first tier is all you need, stop there.

Our free Beginner DIY Tool Kit covers the hand tools, measuring tools and safety gear that sit underneath all three tiers. This page picks up where it stops: the power tools and the shop.

Tier one: weekend fixes

A drill kit with two batteries, a vise to hold work still, and a light to see it by cover almost every small repair. This tier is the cheapest and the one every reader should buy, because everything above it depends on it.

Tier two: your first real build

A deck, a set of built-ins or a flooring and trim job is where a table saw, a miter saw, a bench and a compressor start earning their keep. Read the DEWALT DWE7491RS table saw review and the DEWALT DWS779 miter saw review before buying, and run your project through the deck building cost calculator to see whether the tools beat a contractor quote.

Tier three: the garage shop

When projects come back to back, the garage becomes a shop, and the shop needs power, a stable bench, storage and clean air. Price the wiring first with the garage workshop setup cost guide, then step up the saw using the best table saw and miter saw guide.

For the dust side of a new shop, WorkshopCalc's best dust collectors and best air filtration systems guides compare the options in more depth.

When the starter pack grows into a shop, GarageShopCalc's beginner garage woodshop setup lists the complete build line by line.

What this pack does not include

Hand tools, a tape measure, a level, safety glasses, gloves and a circular saw are in the free Beginner DIY Tool Kit. We also left out dust control and a 240V cabinet saw, which are covered in the garage workshop guide. Researched from manufacturer specs and owner reviews, not tested in person.

Gear for this guide: Amazon and Grizzly picks

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. As a Grizzly Industrial affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Every card pairs an Amazon pick with a Grizzly factory-direct pick. We list no prices because both retailers change them often.

Tier 1: Weekend fixes

Tier total: the smallest of the three, a modest outlay. It covers shelves, hinges, furniture assembly and small repairs.

Drill and driver kit

Which to choose: Start with the Amazon drill if you only hang shelves; choose the Grizzly PRO hammer drill kit if you will ever drill into brick or concrete.

Bench vise

Which to choose: The Amazon swivel vise is the all-purpose clamp; the Grizzly cabinetmaker vise is the choice when your bench is a woodworking bench and you want it to hold flat stock cleanly.

Work light

Which to choose: Both are magnetic gooseneck LEDs; pick either, and pick Grizzly if you are already placing an order there.

Tier 2: First real build

Tier total: a real step up in spending, the middle of the three. It covers a deck, a built-in or a trim package.

Benchtop table saw

Which to choose: DEWALT for a saw you wheel in and out, Grizzly G0869 for a saw that sits on a bench.

Miter saw

Which to choose: DEWALT DWS779 for the widest crosscut, Grizzly T31634 for a compact double-bevel slider.

Workbench, 4 ft

Which to choose: The Amazon oak-top bench has a fixed work surface at 60 in; the Grizzly 4 ft adjustable bench suits a tight garage corner.

Quiet air compressor

Which to choose: Choose by brand preference; both are oil-free 20 gallon units quiet enough for a garage you share with the house.

Tier 3: Garage shop

Tier total: the largest of the three, a serious investment. It turns a garage into a place you can build furniture and cabinets.

Hybrid table saw

Which to choose: Amazon for the brake-equipped SawStop, Grizzly G0962 for the lower-cost cast iron hybrid.

Workbench, 6 ft

Which to choose: Betterhood from Amazon for quick delivery, Grizzly 6 ft adjustable for the matching outlets and the rest of the Grizzly stack.

Tool chest and roller cabinet

Which to choose: Amazon for one rolling cabinet; Grizzly T34658 chest plus T34659 cabinet for the matched stack.

Hanging air filter

Which to choose: Grizzly G0738 for the 1 micron rating and the large owner base, WEN for a remote control.

Frequently asked questions

What tools should a beginner buy first?

A cordless drill kit, a bench vise and a work light for weekend fixes, plus the hand tools in our free Beginner DIY Tool Kit. Add power saws when a real build needs them.

In what order should I buy DIY tools?

Weekend-fix tools first, then the table saw, miter saw, bench and compressor for a first build, then a hybrid saw, a larger bench, storage and air filtration for a garage shop.

Is it cheaper to buy tools or hire a contractor?

It depends on how much of the work you do yourself. Price the job in the matching cost calculator, then compare it with the tools you would need. Tools pay off when you use them across several projects.
